Online Music Theory Classes

Like any language, music consists of three components:

1. Writing (dictations & composition)
2. Reading (notes, symbols, expressive marks)
3. Speaking (sight-singing, rhythms, performing)

Our lessons will touch upon each of these components in an interactive lecture format, facilitating learning through collaborative activities.

At the start of each course session, students will be asked to complete an initial music theory questionnaire to assess their current knowledge and aid in curriculum development. Each class will include activities in rhythm, sight-singing, symbol recognition, and creative composition. Following each class, students will be provided with take-home worksheets to review and study new concepts over the course of the week.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Read music in the treble and bass clefs
  • Understand and demonstrate basic harmonic function as pertains to tonal music
  • Identify various key signatures
  • Perform and dictate rhythmic patterns in duple and triple meter
  • Sing various melodies using solfège syllables

By the end of this course, students will create/perform:

  • A work composed collaboratively as a class
  • A brief essay describing concepts they learned throughout the course
  • A simple harmonic analysis of a classical excerpt
